The Cowboys responded to the potentially devastating loss of defensive end DeMarcus Ware with two body shots in free agency.
The Cowboys have agreed to terms with defensive end Jeremy Mincey and nose tackle Terrell McClain, pending physicals.
These moves came in the aftermath of the team’s decision to cut Ware, the Cowboys’ all-time sack leader on Tuesday for salary-cap reasons and his subsequent signing with the Denver Broncos for $30 million over three years. Ware will get $13 million from the Broncos in 2013 and $20 million guaranteed
Mincey, a seven-year veteran who ironically played in two regular season games and three playoff games with the Broncos last year after being cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars, got a two-year deal for $4.5 million with $2 million guaranteed from the Cowboys.
McClain agreed to terms on a three-year deal with the Cowboys.
Mincey, who was originally drafted by the Patriots in 2006, spent seven seasons with the Jaguars. His best season was in 2011 when he started 16 games and recorded eight sacks. He has 20 sacks in 66 career games.
He will be good fit in Dallas as a rotational player at defensive though there might be some concerns about his character. He was cut by the Jaguars last year for missing team meetings.
McClain is a three-veteran who was originally drafted by the Carolina Panthers in 2011. He started 12 games as a rookie but was cut after four games in 2012. He played one week with the Patriots before signing when the Texans where he has spent the majority of the last two season.
He played in 16 games last season with Houston as a backup player at nose tackle, registering 10 tackles.
He will come to Dallas to play in a rotation with Nick Hayden at the nose tackle position.
Neither of those moves will prohibit the Cowboys from continuing the address the defensive line in free agency and the upcoming NFL Draft.
The Cowboys remain interested in free-agent tackles Jason Hatcher and Henry Melton.
However with roughly $8.9 million in cap room to spend, the focus for the Cowboys is find a number of guys in free agency is to find as many good players as they can who can fit within the salary structure and let them compete for spots.
The Cowboys lost one of the greatest players in franchise history in Ware but they undoubtedly have increased the depth and competition up front with the signings of Mincey and McClain.
