The Cowboys have a chance Sunday to do something they haven't done since 2009. They can guarantee a winning record in their division home games with a victory over the Commanders.
The Cowboys beat the New York Giants 36-31 at AT&T Stadium in the season opener. They play Philadelphia at home in the regular-season finale on Dec. 29.
The Cowboys were 1-2 in their division home games each of the past three seasons. They were 2-1 in 2009, losing to the Giants 33-31 in the debut of the $1.2 billion stadium before beating Washington 7-6 and Philadelphia 24-0 in the regular-season finale to clinch the NFC East. They beat the Eagles 34-14 the following week in a wild-card playoff game.
"I think it’s important. There’s no question about it," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. "You try to treat each of the games the same. There’s 16 games on the schedule. You need to win all of them. They all count the same, but having said that, the division games are important because that means a win for you, and a loss for them. And certainly the division games at home are critical, so you need to play well against your division opponents; you need to play well at home against your division opponents."
