Quarterback Brandon Weeden signed a two-year contract with the Cowboys on Monday.
Weeden and free agent defensive tackle Henry Melton visited Valley Ranch on Monday. The Cowboys are still talking to Melton, although the tackle might be moving out of the club's price range.
Weeden, a former first-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2012, will serve as backup insurance if Kyle Orton decides not to return to the club.
The Cowboys expect a decision on Orton soon. He was wavering on whether to return, but the Cowboys believe it's unlikely he retires because he would have to repay $3 million from a renegotiated contract last year. He is due $3.25 million in base salary this year.
Orton, 31, played in the regular-season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles after Tony Romo had back surgery and completed 30 of 46 passes for 358 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He has played in four games, with one start, in two seasons in Dallas.
The Cowboys have not carried three quarterbacks on their 53-player roster since 2011 when Stephen McGee served as a developmental prospect after the Cowboys made him a fourth-round pick in the 2009 draft.
In two seasons in Cleveland, Weeden started 20 games. He passed for 5,116 yards with 23 touchdowns and 26 interceptions.
