Second-year wide receiver Cole Beasley remembers being the talk of the first week of camp last year, but for an undesirable reason – he quit the team for a couple of days.
But when he returned, after a chance to think about his decision, he was “a different player,” coach Jason Garrett said. The undrafted free agent out of SMU went on to make the team and caught passes in seven of the 10 games he played.
He doesn’t have to go so far to prove himself this year, but he and the Cowboys want him to improve his blocking and be able to do more than run slot routes.
“Blocking is a big thing that I need to establish myself in and show them that I can do that so I’m not a liability in the run game,” Beasley said. “And that’ll help me get on the field a little bit more in the future.”
Garrett said blocking is a key for a 5-foot-8 player like Beasley.
“The challenge for a guy like that is to try to be as complete a receiver as possible,” Garrett said. “You don’t want to be pigeon-holed as, ‘Hey, I’m a slot guy and only a slot guy.’ You have to be able to block. You have to be able to play outside. He’s working very hard on doing that stuff.”
