Kyle Wilber took an illegal blindside block in punt coverage last week against the Rams, but he blamed himself for it.
“If I had made the tackle sooner, he would have never hit me like that,” the Cowboys’ second-year defensive end said. “That’s how I look at it. I felt upset at myself more because I allowed myself to be in that position.
“It was a good block by him, I guess.”
Actually, the block by T.J. McDonald was a penalty – one of two on the play that nullified an 84-yard touchdown return by Tavon Austin with the Cowboys leading 17-0 in the second quarter.
Wilber was steaming about it on the sideline, but not necessarily because it was an illegal hit.
“The trainers told me to just chill out, calm down,” he said. “I said, ‘No, I’m good, I’m going back in the game, I’m fine.’ I wanted to play cause I felt embarrassed that I got hit like that. It was more important for us to win the game than to sit there and feel sorry for yourself.”
Wilber returned to the game, and in the fourth quarter got the first sack of his career.
