Quietly, David Arkin has been taking first-team snaps the entire camp in place of Mackenzy Bernadeau.
Coach Jason Garrett said it hasn’t been perfect, but Arkin is making better.
“There’s some things technically he has to get better at, and we’re working hard with him on that. He’s working on it,” Garrett said. “It’ll just allow him to be a better pass protector and a stronger run blocker. But he brings it every day. He cares a great deal about getting better, and he works at it, and he’s improving before our eyes.”
Arkin was a fourth-round pick in 2011 out of Missouri State, but he never saw the field as a rookie, and last year he didn’t emerge, either. But the Cowboys stuck with him, hoping to develop offensive line depth in-house. When they had to start camp without Bernadeau, they put Arkin in his place, and he hasn’t left.
“It’s a couple training camps in a row where Ark has gotten a lot of reps here in Oxnard because other guys have been banged up a little bit,” Garrett said. “He always brings it, there’s no question about that. He is the right kind of guy – he loves football, he works very hard at it, and he’s getting better.”
