Michael Irvin thinks Dez Bryant can win the league MVP award this year. But Bryant said he’s playing the wrong position – he’d rather Tony Romo win it.
“Right, because if he gets it, I already know we were a part of it,” Bryant said. “That is just as good to me.”
Bryant, talking to reporters Thursday about Irvin’s prediction a day earlier on NFL Network, was asked what it would take to win the MVP award.
“A quarterback,” he said, drawing laughs. “Being a quarterback.”
As the laughter died down, Bryant said, “Hopefully, this year, I believe Tony’s got a good shot at being MVP because I think his mindset is to go out and get it. Us, we’re going to be behind him 100 percent. So, can’t wait.”
No receiver has ever won the NFL's most valuable player award. Bryant said he doesn’t care about it for himself, anyway.
"If it comes, it comes. Everybody will be excited," he said. "I’m more excited getting to see Tony get it and just knowing I was part of it. That’s how I look at it. I think MVPs go to quarterbacks because they’re the boss, the CEO on the field, and we're just out there to get him where he’s supposed to go."
Bryant agreed with coach Jason Garrett, who said Bryant could have lesser statistics but a better season.
"That's the great thing about it. We're all going to have some good numbers," Bryant said.
Bryant said if the Cowboys have a successful season, Romo would deserve the award.
“Seriously. I honestly feel like, we do everything we’re supposed to do, we’ll get it,” Bryant said. “Without a doubt.”
