Gavin Escobar caught the kind of pass Monday night that he did in college and that caught the Cowboys’ eye.

“The seam pass? Oh, yeah. Caught a lot of those in college,” he said.

He hopes the 25-yard catch reminded the Cowboys what they got when they drafted him in the second round out of San Diego State.

“I’m definitely capable of that,” he said. “I can do that whenever my number’s called. I’m confident in that. I’m confident I can do that game in and game out.”

So are the Cowboys. They know he can catch. But he hasn’t been a strong enough blocker to keep on the field, which is part of the reason he has only seven catches on the year.

“I understand,” he said. “It’s the NFL. Being a rookie, you’re still a rookie, no matter where you’re drafted; it’s going to be a transition. I probably was expecting more, in the offense, but I’m just trying to get better at blocking. I think that’s something that kept me off the field early. So I’m just trying to improve on that. The next off-season is going to be big for me.”

Escobar will do what he can to contribute over the next three games. But he realizes he has already come a long way since he arrived at Valley Ranch in April.

“The other day, I was thinking about that,” he said. “We just had a new tight end come in, and he’s not used to our technique. I think back to all the technique I’ve learned. I’ve just gotten so much better as a player all around, with footwork and everything. I’ve just got to continue to do that.”
