Last year, the Cowboys won a big game against the Giants to open the season then went on the road in a traditionally hostile environment against a team coming off a down year.
They are in the same situation again.
Last year, the Cowboys stubbed their toe in the opening moments against the Seattle Seahawks, letting the “12th Man” into the game. This year, they want to avoid a bad start in Kansas City that would let the “Sea of Red” into the game.
“I think there are some lessons to learn,” coach Jason Garrett said. “We had a good win last year, up in New York, a game the visiting team hadn't won in 12 years. That was a big win for our team, to win one on the road against a really, really good football team, in a hard environment.
“In Seattle, we didn't do the things that winning football teams do. We fumbled the opening kickoff and made some other mistakes. It’s a crowd as loud as there is in the National Football League, got even louder early on in that game. There will be some similar challenges this week.”
The Cowboys practiced with artificial crowd noise at AT&T Stadium twice this week, preparing for what quarterback Tony Romo predicted would be a difficult game.
“I think this might be out of our opening five, six games, this could be the toughest with the environment and the problems with what they do defensively and their scheme,” Romo said. “This will be a very difficult game to go in and execute a high level.”
Witten said the Cowboys can’t let crowd noise get in the way of what they’re trying to do, both on the field and in the bigger picture.
“One thing we’re trying to create, and that’s what Coach Garrett has talked about, is winning a big game and then stacking more wins on each other,” he said. “That’s what our focus is, and it’s easier said than done.”
