The Cowboys are being patient with safety Matt Johnson, who has yet to return to practice because of a stress reaction in his ankle.

Jason Garrett termed the injury day to day as the Cowboys are trying to be cautious with the Johnson so it doesn't turn into a stress fracture.

But the problem is that it has set Johnson back in his ability to compete for a spot at safety.

Johnson suffered the injury during a brief appearance in the preseason opener against the Dolphins. He missed the Raiders game last Friday. He has yet to return to practice and not expected to play in a preseason game any time soon, Garrett said.

The bigger problem is that Johnson missed all of his rookie season with injuries and barely practiced.

Garrett said they like what Johnson has done in practice so far this year but the Cowboys need to see him on the field in games to get a true evaluation.

"We’re certainly hopeful. He’s been dealing with a few different injuries since he got here," Garrett said. "Obviously, being available is a really important trait for a player. If you’re not durable, if you haven’t shown that and you can’t practice and plays in games, it’s hard for us to evaluate you. But Matt is a young player and we like him, we like what he’s done. We’ve just got to get him out there and see if he can get in the mix and compete for one of these safety spots."
