Head coach Jason Garrett said he has to give attention to the defense this year because the Cowboys have to play better in that area.
“The best teams in this league, they play better defense than we played,” he said at the owners meetings in Orlando this week. “We have to do a better job in that area. So that is an area I have to give my attention to, give my focus to throughout the offseason and as we go forward in OTAs, mini-camp and camp and during the season. We have just got to simply play better over there.”
Garrett’s increased attention to defense is the main reason for the hiring of new offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, who believes in the same kind of offensive principles as Garrett.
“My first exposure to coaching was under him, and he and I have very similar philosophies about offensive football and how we do things,” Garrett said. “There are some terminology things that are common to both of our offensive systems, certainly philosophical similarly in foundation. We think that what he's going to bring is certainly positive and an outside influence that’s different than what we've been doing. You always want to evolve your offense from year-to-year and continue to grow with your system. There is a foundation that we have in place, a philosophy that's very similar and we're excited about the different things that he's going to bring.”
Garrett said he’s still going to be plugged in to what the offensive staff is putting together.
“I’m certainly going to still be connected with them and communicate very closely with them on how we are doing things and share some of my thoughts on it, hear some of their thoughts and decide what’s best for our football team,” he said. “But I have a lot of confidence in Scott Linehan, a lot of confidence in Bill Callahan and the whole offensive staff to do things the way we want to do them.”
