The Cowboys spent the first two days at the Senior Bowl answering questions about their coordinators. But Jason Garrett has his own job-security issues after three consecutive 8-8 years.
“I’m focused on doing my job and our staff’s job as well as we can do it,” he said Tuesday, asked if he would like more security in terms of more years on his contract. “That’s always been my approach in this game as a player and as a coach, and that’s what I’m focused on. The business side takes care of itself. We’ve got to do a better job to break through and become the team we want to be.”
Asked how close the Cowboys are to breaking through, Garrett said, “Well, we just have to simply get better. We’ve been close the last three years, as we all know -- opportunity in that last game of the season to win our division; the last two years, it’s a two-minute drive away from winning our division, and we didn’t get that done. And we have to live with that reality, and we have to look at the things that are positive and build on them and correct the other things. This is one of the real early stages of correcting the other things, trying to add personnel to our team that can make a difference to help us get to the next level.”
Jones on Monday again expressed confidence in Garrett and said he wants to see the investment in him and Kiffin pay off equally.
"I didn’t want to cut it short over on defense, and some of them same principles are true with cutting it short on Jason," Garrett said. "I’ve talked about that. I want to be here for the payday, and this is payday time with Jason."
