Cowboys coach Jason Garrett acknowledged the loss that Lance Dunbar’s injury causes the team, but he said the show must go on.
“We certainly move on,” he said Tuesday at Valley Ranch as the Cowboys met for the first time since the Thanksgiving Day victory against Oakland, in which Dunbar ran for a career-high 82 yards but left in the fourth quarter with a knee injury. “DeMarco Murray is our lead back, has been our lead back all year long. He’ll be the lead dog. The other guys, Joseph Randle and Phillip Tanner, will have to step up if they have an opportunity if DeMarco can’t go.”
Dunbar will undergo surgery for the knee. He was placed on IR on Tuesday, so his season is over.
“We certainly had plans for him being a factor in our offense,” Garrett said. “Whenever we’ve given him a chance to do that, he seems to do positive things for us, either running the football or catching balls out of the backfield. He’s just one of those guys. He’s been a spark-type player for us in the different situations he’s gotten chances. Everything he’s done, he’s done well for us. He’s a tough kid. He’s certainly quick and explosive and can be very productive. We’re certainly going to miss him.”
Garrett said the team still has home-run threats despite missing Dunbar’s speed.
“I think we have that in a lot of different places,” Garrett said. “Certainly we have that with our receiving corps. Any of those guys are guys who can make plays for us down the field. We have that in a funny kind of way with Witten, who makes a lot of vertical plays for us, and certainly with our runner. DeMarco Murray is a guy who has made a lot of big runs for us over the course of his career. Lance does it a little bit differently and was a quicker, kind of a smaller, quicker, explosive guy, but the other guys have certainly been productive making big plays for us as well.”
