Cowboy coach Jason Garrett said the team didn’t have much of a chance to evaluate its running game without DeMarco Murray once they had to play without him last week against the Commanders.
“We didn’t have many opportunities,” Garrett said. “I think we had 47 plays in the game.”
The Cowboys had 19 carries for 48 yards. Murray left after seven carries because of a left knee sprain. Rookie Joseph Randle took over and finished with 11 carries for 17 yards. Phillip Tanner had one carry in short yardage for a 2-yard gain.
“If you evaluate our running game, we had a number of short-yardage situations in the game that we were successful at, we had a couple of tight red-zone situations that we were successful at,” Garrett said. “We had four-minute runs at the end of the game that we weren’t quite as successful at. Those are challenging situations to be in. So you’ve got to be careful about evaluating those rushing attempts and the yards we had and the average we had in the ball game.
“Having said that, we’ve got to be able to run the football better. We have to be able to run the football well when DeMarco is not our runner.”
Garrett said Randle did well for facing eight, nine and 10 men in the box and praised him for taking care of the ball.
“He was in some of those situations at the end of the game where it’s difficult,” Garrett said. “I thought he handled himself well.”
