Coach Jason Garrett is so enamored of Zack Martin, he said the Notre Dame tackle will even improve the defense.
“We’re going to be a better offensive line, a better offense, and we’ll probably play better on defense – the better we play on the offensive line,” Garrett said after the first round of the draft Thursday night at Valley Ranch. “We’ll be able to run the football better, control the game a little bit more.”
Garrett remembers that the Cowboys of the ‘90s won their championships behind a strong offensive line.
“We believe that games in the National Football League are won up front,” Garrett said. “The best teams now and for a lot of years were able to control the line of scrimmage on the offensive side of the ball. We did that here when we won championships in the ‘90s. You need to build the infrastructure of your team. We got a great start on that by drafting Tyron Smith. Added to that last year by drafting Travis Frederick. We feel like Zack Martin is in the mold of those kinds of guys.”
Garrett said the Cowboys will let Martin compete right away, although they’ll start him out at guard instead of tackle.
“He’s played a lot of snaps at a high level, so we feel like he’s a guy who mentally can handle it. Athletically, he can handle it,” Garrett said. “We’re going to put him in, mix him into the competition we have up front.”
