DeMarco Murray averaged 4.3 yards on his 20 carries against the Giants, which is a productive effort. For his career, he has a 4.8 average.
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said the third-year back ran with confidence Sunday night as he picked up 86 yards.
“You go back and look at some plays and you say, ‘Hey, maybe he could have done this. Maybe he could have done that,’ ” Garrett said. “I thought he ran with confidence. He took care of the football, and when he had a chance to go north and south, he went north and south with authority and knocked them back and had a physical presence about him. That’s the kind of runner he’s been since he’s been in this league.”
For Murray, it was the ninth time he has carried 20 times or more in a game. He had higher yardage totals in five other 20-plus-carry games, including the 253-, 139- and 135-yard games he put up in the space of four weeks as a rookie in 2011.
Garrett was disappointed the Cowboys could not run out the clock with Murray in the fourth quarter Sunday night, but he liked Murray’s style behind the zone blocking scheme.
“He always seems to be a guy that, if it’s blocked for four, he’s going to make five or six,” Garrett said. “He’s always finishing forward, and I think we saw some of those runs last night.”
Murray said he felt good during the game, although the long run to chase down an interception left him with “spaghetti legs” the rest of the game.
“We didn’t have a lot of negative runs,” he said. “So whenever you don’t do that, you’re doing pretty good.”
