With 18 days to go before the season opener, Jay Ratliff doesn’t appear close to even slipping on pads, let alone practicing.
“He’s just working on his rehab right now,” coach Jason Garrett said, asked for an update at his daily press conference Wednesday.
It was not a strong endorsement of a timeline that could have the veteran defensive tackle ready for action against the Giants. Garrett has said in the past that players like Ratliff are able to step in and play on short notice.
“Really, more than anything else, he’s just trying to get himself stronger,” Garrett said. “Working very hard, and we see him making progress. He’ll have check-ups with doctors as we go here. If he’s clear to do things, he’ll go a little further. He hasn’t been out on the field practicing football at all for us. He’s doing most of his work on the side. We feel like he’s making progress.”
Ratliff’s season ended with five games to go last year because of a groin injury. He did not practice in camp in California because of a hamstring injury suffered in the conditioning test.
