Jason Garrett said he didn’t know if he took a bigger role in play-calling, but the new mechanics of the Cowboys’ play-calling – with quarterback coach Wade Wilson joining offensive coordinator Bill Callahan in the booth and Garrett communicating directly with Romo – apparently went smoothly.
“We were trying to emphasize communication during the game,” Garrett said. “Wade Wilson had been in that role, taking the plays from Bill and talking to Tony. It’s something I have done for a long time, whether I was calling plays as an assistant coach or as a player. I have been in that role a lot. It’s a role I’m comfortable with. It was an opportunity to get Wade upstairs to see the game. Wade’s got great eyes. It was good for us.”
Romo said it went “smooth.”
“To the quarterback on the field, it doesn’t sound terribly different because it’s just coming in,” he said. “I think having another set of eyes – and Wade has 85 years experience in football – helps be able to see everything.”
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the idea was to take advantage of Wilson's expertise.
"It’s a skill that we’ve long since not taken advantage of," Jones said. "Wade Wilson is outstanding and can do a better job for us. I’ve always – not always thought it – I just know that he can from down there. And they’ve worked together, all three of them, now going on seven years. Who actually is calling something into that head set. And Tony’s got the ability to make the call anyway, no matter whether it’s Wade or Garrett or who. Tony literally decides what run is run out there."
