Ron Leary was good, but got tired.
David Arkin continues to play hard.
That is the assessment coach Jason Garrett provided on the Cowboys’ guards in the preseason opener. If you can read between the lines, it’s not hard to tell the Cowboys gained confidence in Leary but that Arkin is stuck in neutral.
“I think Ron played 62 plays in the game and did a lot of good things,” Garrett said at his Tuesday press conference. “He was strong, he was physical. But he also got tired, and a lot of those guys who played a lot of snaps got tired. They have to understand what they need to be able to do to play at this level. … A lot of real positives for Ron Leary, but again, being able to sustain that throughout the ballgame is important for him, like it was for a number of our younger players.”
Garrett said Arkin played the way he has played.
“He plays tough. He played hard,” Garrett said. “There are times the pass rusher got on his edge a little bit. There are times he didn’t get to the second level in the run game.
But he loves this game, and he is very passionate about it and you can see the strides he is making.”
