Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says it’s going to be hard to coach the fumbling out of Dez Bryant, because he is so “violent” with the ball.
“He’s violent when he’s got the ball, and he’s violent going after the ball,” Jones said Tuesday on his weekly appearance on KRLD 105.3 FM “The Fan.” “Consequently, he does need to have that ball in closer. He needs to have it fundamentally closer to his body. I don’t know how much of that we’ll really be able to coach out of him.”
Bryant fumbled in the third quarter against the Giants, losing the ball when it was punched out as he ran east-west trying to gain yardage. The ball rolled out of bounds for a 20-yard loss.
“You’d like to say, ‘Hey, just take the ball and go straight up field rather than try to take it across,’ ” Jones said. “Of course, right about the time that comes out of your mouth, he goes lateral across that field and breaks it for about 40 yards. So a lot of this is a natural, physical way he plays football, and you’re not going to coach it out of him.”
Jones was pleased that the Cowboys got the ball to Bryant, targeting him 16 times as he caught nine passes for 102 yards, and the way they moved him around.
“You just know what an exceptional player he is, what a problem he is for the defense,” Jones said. “What sometimes is so obvious for our fans and for everyone, to say we’ve got to do more, is just as obvious to our staff and obvious to our players. Now, getting that done is different. And the defense has a lot to say about it. It did help to have Miles Austin back. It did help keep some focus off of Dez and some focus off Witten, but I thought they did a great job of putting them both on the same side many times in the alignment, which gives that onside safety a real tough decision to make sometimes as to which one he’s going to double.”
