Safety J.J. Wilcox left camp earlier this week to be with his gravely ill mother. Marshell Wilcox died Tuesday.
The Cowboys rookie will remain at his home in Cairo, Ga., until after the funeral, returning to the team next week, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said.
"It’s tough for anyone, just tough for anybody, a young person, an adult," Garrett said. "Obviously, a very difficult time, and we have complete respect for what is going on in his life right now and want to give him all the opportunity to make sure he takes care of that the way he needs to. All the support systems are available to him. I think it’s just a really difficult thing in life."
Five years ago, Marshell was diagnosed with lupus, a chronic and lifelong autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack the body’s own tissue and organs. She also has lung sarcoidosis, a syndrome involving abnormal collections of chronic inflammatory cells that can form as nodules in the lungs.
