Tight end James Hanna said he last had a hamstring injury when he ran track in high school. That's why the hamstring strain he now has is so frustrating.

Hanna's hamstring tightened on him during Sunday's first practice. He missed work Monday but hopes to return by the end of the week.

"I just took a step. It felt a little funny," Hanna said. "It shouldn’t be too long, though."

Hanna had been getting a lot of reps in the team's 12 personnel -- one running back and two tight ends. Rookie Gavin Escobar took over Hanna's role Monday.

"I’m trying to work through it," Hanna said. "I try not to think about opportunity, because it [injuries] happens. It’s part of the game."

The Cowboys drafted James Hanna in the sixth round last year, and Hanna played in 107 play for the season. His playing time increased in the final four games as he played 52 plays to John Phillips' 55. Phillips left for San Diego as a free agent, and the Cowboys drafted Escobar in the second round.
