After being picked in the fifth round of the 2013 draft, it was assumed that Joseph Randle would move right into the backup running back spot behind DeMarco Murray. The Cowboys had him as a third-round talent on the draft board and felt he had the skills to make an immediate impact.
But that was before Randle missed the offseason because of thumb surgery. He was cleared to start training camp but has yet to turn any heads with his play. Garrett attributes the slow start to rust but he says he was impressed with how Randle stayed mentally engaged with the football team while he was injured and believes he improve throughout training camp and the preseason.
"Randle missed the whole spring as you know with the thumb," Garrett said. "I was really impressed with how he stayed engaged with our football team. We talked about a lot of information for these rookies and each and every day you could tell he was studying, he was on top of things in meetings, and it was particularly hard when you’re not getting practice reps to learn things. I thought he did a nice job of that for a young guy and I think he’s shown that here early on in training camp. He has quickness, he has explosiveness, I think he has natural running ability. He has good vision, and I think he’s a pretty good pass receiver as well. His big challenge right now is getting snaps, getting reps, getting experience running this stuff over and over and over again. He gets a chance to do that over the next five or six weeks."
