Coach Jason Garrett said the decisions the Cowboys made regarding their final roster the past couple of days were done with special teams in mind.
That includes the trade with Kansas City for defensive end Edgar Jones, claiming linebacker Kyle Bosworth off waivers from the Giants and keeping six safeties on the roster.
"Well, that was really our intention," Garrett said of Jones and Bosworth. "You want to make sure that the 53 guys you have on our roster are guys who have a role. Often times those roles are as position players, but, as you know, the bottom part of your roster, a big role for those guys is to play special teams. We thought it was really important to make the right decisions with cutting our team down and then acquiring players over the last couple of days. And we feel good about each of these guys. We like them as position players and what they can do for us in a role. But they have been very good special teams for their teams. So, we are excited to see hem play. Got them integrated into practice this morning and they are ready to go."
The decision at safety to keep veterans Danny McCray and Eric Frampton in reserve roles in addition to grooming rookies Jeff Heath and J.J. Wilcox behind starters Will Allen and Barry Church was rooted in their impact on special teams.
It leaves the Cowboys thin at cornerback with just four on the roster but it's a chance the Cowboy are willing to take to shore up a special teams unit that was gashed throughout the preseason on returns.
"They are good players as defensive players, but also good players on special teams players," Garrett said. "Danny McCray has been as good a special teams player as we've had. He's been our special teams captain. He's one of those guys where you say, he's playing safety, but his most significant role is as a teams guy, you can really view Frampton the same way. We feel good if something happens that those guys can play on defense for us, but more than anything else they're special team guys that will help our team that way. You know as well as I know, there might be 18, 20, 25 snaps in a ballgame that those guys are playing in the kicking game and those are critical plays. They've been very good at it for our team, in Framp's case throughout his career with other teams. So, that was a big decision."
