Cowboys coach Jason Garrett echoed owner Jerry Jones Thursday, saying the experiment of right tackle Doug Free at guard could be a permanent one.

It was initially thought that Free's move to guard last week was because of concerns about Ron Leary's status for the season opener. Leary, the projected starter at left guard, has been out since because of arthroscopic knee surgery Aug. 16.

Leary is on track to be back next week and play in the season opener against the Giants. However, Garrett said Free might stay at guard in place of Mackenzy Bernadeau with Jermey Parnell replacing him at right tackle.

Garrett said his goal is to get the five best lineman as well as the best combination on the field.

"We did play Doug last wek at right guard and Jermey at right tackle," Garrett said. "That was a good thing for our football team just to see that in a live game situation. They have been practicing that way a little bit. Again, the idea was to get the five best guys out there, the best combination of five as well. So that's certainly an alternative for us going forward. We will see how is shakes out in the next few days."
