Coach Jason Garrett confirmed Saturday the morning that the Cowboys are considering sitting quarterback Tony Romo and possibly a few other starters in the Aug. 4 Hall of Fame game against the Miami Dolphins.

"Sure it's a consideration," Garrett said. "We have five preseason games. But nothing has been decided."

It follows up report for KRLD FM 105.3 the Fan that quotes Garrett as saying that not only might Romo sit in the meaningless preseason opener but possibly backup quarterback Kyle Orton.

"It's one of those deals where I suppose he could play five plays or whatever, but we might lean to no plays," Garrett said. "But the clock starts on our '1s' (first-teamers) in Week 2 of the preseason. So that's not going to be Tony's game. That’s going to be a Nick Stephens game and an Alex Tanney game.’’

It would likely mean that Romo, who started off training camp a little rusty after missing the entire offseason program because of minor back surgery, doesn’t make his preseason debut until the second preseason game against the Oakland Raiders Aug. 9.

It actually makes sense considering the Cowboys have the extra preseason game because of the Hall of Fame game and history says Romo was likely only going to make a cameo appearance anyway.

The last time they played in a Hall of Fame game was 2010 and Romo played only played the opening series.

If Romo sits, the same possibly could be said for other veteran starters lik etight end Jason Witten, defensive end DeMarcus Ware and defensive tackle Jason Hatcher.
