DeMarco Murray is going to be carrying the ball a lot for the Cowboys. Jason Garrett wants to make sure he carries it right, even in something as simple as a walk-through.
The Cowboys coach said he spent time talking to Murray specifically about how to carry the football, re-emphasizing “five points of contact” and avoiding the “low and loose” method that leads to fumbles.
“Carry it high, and your wrist is above your elbow, and you carry it tight to your body,” Garrett said. “There’s five points of contact you need to have when you carry the football. One of the things we try to emphasize, every play, regardless of what it is, it’s an opportunity for you to develop a habit to become the player you are. If you’re in a walk-through situation and you’re a running back on our team, you’re expected to carry it high and tight. We don’t want to carry it parallel or low and loose. That results in fumbles.”
Murray fumbled only once as a rookie with the Cowboys, but last year he had three, including a red-zone fumble against Pittsburgh in Week 15 and one at the Cowboys’ 3 the next week against New Orleans, which turned into a go-ahead touchdown.
He has four fumbles in 325 carries as a pro.
“He’s going to carry the ball a lot for our us,” Garrett said. “It’s not his ball. It’s our ball. It’s real important that he understands that.”
