Jason Hatcher always will have a fond spot in his heart for the Cowboys, who drafted him out of Grambling in the third round in 2006. He hoped to stay in Dallas, but the Commanders offered too much money.

Hatcher, who turns 32 this summer, signed a four-year, $27.5 million contract with Washington, leaving the salary-cap-strapped Cowboys after a career year.

"They didn’t show no signs that they wanted me back," Hatcher told KRLD-FM on Thursday. "I know the fans are upset. They should be. They have all the right in the world to be. But I made the right decision for me. If we could’ve made it work out we would’ve, but I’m in a great place with the Commanders, a great organization. I’m looking forward to getting back to football."

Hatcher earned a Pro Bowl berth after a career-high 11 sacks playing in the Tampa 2 defense. He returns to defensive end in the Commanders' 3-4 defense.

"I just left a great organization," Hatcher told the Cowboys Radio Network's flagship station. "I really appreciate what Jerry Jones and his family did for me. The fans have always been behind me. Things change and you just got to take it in stride, take it all in and get back to playing football."

The Cowboys have lost half of their starting defensive line in two days, with DeMarcus Ware leaving for Denver's three-year, $30 million offer Wednesday.
