ARLINGTON -– Jason Witten put up some pretty gaudy numbers last year when he finished the season with 110 receptions for 1,039 yards.

But there’s one important statistic that kept nagging at the Dallas Cowboys’ tight end.

His lack of touchdowns.

Among all those single-season career catches Witten collected last season, he managed just three touchdowns. And during an 8-8 season the Cowboys lumbered to last year, that weighed heavily on the 10-year veteran during the offseason.

“That’s what good tight ends want to do,’’ Witten said after the Cowboys opened the season Sunday with a 36-31 win over the New York Giants. “It’s not all about catches.

“It’s finding ways to make touchdowns and help your team win games. That’s been an emphasis for me and our entire team.’’

Witten caught two touchdown passes Sunday from quarterback Tony Romo. It was just the third
time in his career that Witten has had two TD receptions in one game, and only
the first time he and Romo hooked up for a pair of TD catches in one game.

Witten said he was totally aware that he had never caught more than one touchdown from Romo
in a game during his career. However, he was able to make amends by scoring on passes of 21 and 4 yards from Romo in the season opener.

Asked if he was surprised this is the first time Romo has thrown two touchdown passes to Witten in a single game, coach Jason Garrett said: "It probably does surprise me, but they're good players. They've connected on a lot of plays in their careers.''
