Jaylon Smith is going to do something some teams never thought he’d do on Sunday — play in an NFL game.

Smith’s return from a severe knee injury is among the feel-good storylines for the Dallas Cowboys going into the season opener against the New York Giants on Sunday night. But this isn’t a time for Smith to reflect on his journey back to the field.

“Right now it’s all about executing the game plan that we put together and it’s something I’m all in,” Smith said. “The past is a bucket of ashes. For me, those things they’ve occurred, they’ve happened, but it’s about living in the now. It’s Week One. It’s time to prepare.”

Smith returned to game action last month, playing 12 snaps against the Indianapolis Colts and 15 against the Oakland Raiders in preseason games.

He is just a guy at this point in time, hopefully that next tier will come, even if it never arrives he can hold his head up high as he always has given all he has to coming back to full recovery. I salute him and the horrible road he has traveled this last year. Till then I have my fingers crossed on Hitchens coming back fully and quicker than expected. Durant and Smith should be able to hold the fort down with Sean Lee next to them. Thanks goodness for Sean Lee and his health being good.

I'd say his comeback will be complete when he's the same player he was before the injury. He's damaged goods right now.

I will take those damaged goods and the odds right now over many other 100% healthy players. And this is without him playing a down yet.

If Durant and Smith can hold the fort down until Hitchens returns...I consider that a big win for the defense. As when Hitchens returns, it means we are that much better just by the number of players we can put out there and can count on.
