Jerry Jones admits long odds for Cowboys in 2014

IRVING — The Dallas Cowboys didn’t give their fans much good news this off-season as Jason Hatcher left in free agency, DeMarcus Ware was cut and Sean Lee tore the ACL in his left knee.

In training camp, second-round pick DeMarcus Lawrence broke his right foot, and the NFL suspended starting cornerback Orlando Scandrick four games.

The team’s winless preseason didn’t do anything to improve fans’ outlook for the 2014 season.

Then, there was Cowboys owner Jerry Jones at the annual Kickoff Luncheon using clichés such as “uphill battle” and “backs against the wall” during his state-of-the-team address.

Is it doom-and-gloom already for the home team?

“There is a difference being optimistic and assessing the odds,” Jones said after Thursday night’s preseason game. “These guys that we’re going to expect to play have a lot to prove to play at the level we want them to play. ... So it is some real odds here. I had always thought you do some of your best work [when odds are longest].

“You’ve got no-name guys. You’ve got guys out there who are not No. 1 draft picks. You’ve got guys out there who [were] retired. You’ve got guys who are coming back from injury. Man, this is a “to prove” group, ol’ “to prove” Cowboys out here.

“Consequently, that’s big odds. And so if they can get in there and show them and do it quarter by quarter, then that’s the kind of team I hope that we can put on the field. Does everybody understand how we’re thought about by the [analysts]? Unquestionably they do.”...

I kind of like it when all is boiled down, even Jerry has to just show some loyalty as an owner.

This fan is signing up for the struggles!!

@toddarcher: I guess I've missed how he's been given a pass on this matter. But this is where Jerry can't win. If he professed Super Bowl expectations, then he would be ridiculed for overselling a team that clearly needs a lot of help. Jones has been more realistic (mostly) about this team, although saying this defense is much improved seems to be a stretch after what was witnessed in the preseason. The failings of this team's personnel are squarely on Jones. He's the general manager. He's responsible for this. But that doesn't mean he will be changing the general manager anytime soon or ever. Jason Garrett or others will have to pay for the sins of how Jones has constructed the team.

Generally speaking, I prefer us to come into the season with low expectations from the media and other fanbases. The teams with hype trains often crash in disastrous fashion.

There's no reason for us to not have one of the top offenses in the league this year. We were near the top last season and should be better now than we were then. That alone should keep us competitive and in contention for the division title.

Once we see what this no name defense can do we'll know what we are.

WOW, This is really scarry, Jerry Jones setting low expectations.
The worst thing about this is the Boys can now go 6 and 10 and Garrett will get another pass ... smh

He stated the same thing this summer in the ESPN expose' and said straight out that Red had to win to save himself. So at least Johnny Walker Blue is a truth serum.

There would be an extension if that were the case. Jerry knows he can't sell Red to the fan base right now so no extension.

Not sure how a 6-10 season changes this. Somebody name me one head coach in the last 20 seasons that misses the playoffs 4 consecutive years and came back for a 5 season

He must have been sober when he stated prior to training camp that the Cowboys didn't necessarily have to make the playoffs for Garrett to save his job.

I would think so..that or just another opinion in the wind because he now has mentioned Red with needing to win and backs against wall. More cliches needed please Jer.

For those who didn't know what I was referring to

Coach Garrett is in the final year of his contract, and Jones says Garrett's future likely will depend on what happens on the field this season.

It appears the 0-4 preseason has humbled him and he's changed his tune. It's obvious he doesn't like what he's seeing and it's gotten him to concede some things he never concedes.

He could win by shutting his trap.

At this stage of the off season descriptions...I'd have to agree. He is leaving absolutely nothing to a fan's imagination, and this year...that's not a good course to steer, maybe.
