Dez Bryant said he didn't know the rule. Jerry Jones says he should have.
"The Emmitt Smith rule is what that’s called when you take your helmet off to run off the field or take your helmet off when the play is over," the Cowboys owner said on his weekly radio show on KRLD-FM. "That’s an Emmitt Smith rule. The Dallas Cowboy players should know that one better than any team in the league. When players don’t know rules, that’s a joint fault of coaching as well as the player."
After Bryant was called for offensive pass interference in the third quarter, he took off his helmet to argue with officials. That's an automatic 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, and it pushed the Cowboys out of field-goal range.
Bryant said after the game that he didn't know the rule, which is known as the Emmitt Smith rule. The NFL's all-time leading rusher routinely took his helmet off after touchdowns until the league banned it in 1997. The only exceptions are during timeouts, between quarters and player injuries.
