Arlington won't get a second Super Bowl until at least 2019. NFL owners selected Indianapolis, Minneapolis and New Orleans as finalists for Super Bowl LII in '18.
"That was frankly by design," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said during his weekly radio show on KRLD-FM when asked about AT&T Stadium not being a finalist. "We stayed in the queue by basically the league asking us, and we put our name in the hopper. But several weeks ago we decided we wouldn’t make a presentation that is made at this [NFL owners] meeting that we attended Tuesday, ...which for all practical purposes meant you were not going to be in the running. There are a lot of reasons for that. Houston has just gotten the Super Bowl [in 2017]. If you check the record, it’s very, very rare, if any time that the same area, the same state has gotten a Super Bowl two years in a row. So that was an issue. Then, you had the new stadium coming on in Minnesota. ...So when you really looked at that, looked at some teams that were involved, we thought there was a better day for us in the future."
Super Bowl XLV was marred by ice, snow and a seating fiasco. Despite that, North Texas’ first time as host is not expected to be the last.
AT&T Stadium is the NFL’s largest, which translated to the biggest financial payday for the league in Super Bowl history as face value for tickets was $800, $900 and $1,200 at Super Bowl XLV.
The NFL lists official attendance at Super Bowl XLV at 91,060, but that omits the 12,159 credentialed personnel. Only the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., which has hosted five times, drew more Super Bowl fans.
