Cowboys owner Jerry Jones believes the team can win with a defensive line that doesn’t include DeMarcus Ware – if it plays with the kind of energy it displayed against the Commanders on Sunday night.
“That’s way early and premature to say that we’re going to be without Ware,” Jones said. “But I think we can win ballgames with the players that we got.”
After Ware went out with a quadriceps strain in the second quarter, the Cowboys were left with George Selvie and Kyle Wilber as the defensive ends and Jason Hatcher and Nick Hayden as the tackles, plus their backups – ends Edgar Jones and Caesar Rayford and tackles Drake Nevis and David Carter.
“Those no-name guys are making plays,” Jones said. “And the big thing they’re doing is they’re continuing to press and give high energy. I think they were in there 77 plays, and that’s a lot of rushes for a defensive lineman without any more depth than we had out there. So if they’ll play like that and play with that kind of will, then yes, we can win a lot of games playing like that.”
The pressbox totals showed Hatcher with six tackles, a tackle for loss, two quarterback hits and a forced fumble.
Selvie had four tackles. Wilber had three tackles, a quarterback hit and a strip-sack and recovery.
Hayden had three tackles, and Nevis, Carter and Rayford had one tackle each.
“We’ve had a lot of different bodies coming in since, really, the middle of training camp,” coach Jason Garrett said. “Guys have stepped up and done a nice job. They’ve learned our system as quickly as they can, and they’re playing the right way. … To have the young guys step up, you know, whether it’s Caesar, whether it’s Kyle Wilber, whether it’s Drake Nevis inside, each of those guys are really just battling and trying to make an impact on the game, and I think they did.”
