Jerry Jones said quarterback Tony Romo doesn’t have to be perfect, but even a perfect quarterback needs help from the defense.
“We’ve got to have everything we can possibly get out of him. That doesn’t have to be flawless to win a football game. But we’ve got to count on getting some stops,” Jones said. “You have to get some stops. And you have to get some turnovers.”
Romo led the Cowboys to touchdowns on their first two possessions. But the Bears answered every time, and when the Cowboys couldn’t score on their third possession, the Bears scored again and took a 24-14 lead into halftime.
By the time Romo and Cowboys got the ball back, they trailed 35-14. Their game plan to run the ball was out the window.
“We had to get out of what should have been a winning offensive performance out there,” Jones said. “When we had to get out of that, then I think we didn’t convert on a couple of third downs. That hurt us in the first half, going into the first possession of the second half. Those were critical plays for us.”
Jones knows that the game will go on Romo’s December record. But he said that didn’t matter to him.
“I really don’t think I’ve ever made a decision regarding Tony in any way that involved a thought about his December record,” Jones said. “It just is not an issue. Now, we need to win a game. We need to win next week. But the December thing is not a big factor in the things I need to look at.”
