Jerry Jones says when the Cowboys are in AT&T Stadium, they make up for the lack of their name on the building.
“The team, when it’s in there, puts the blue in it, the stars in it – puts the Cowboys in it. That’s the effect that we get there,” the Cowboys owner said, speaking to reporters Saturday night in Oxnard in his first comments since the name change was revealed Thursday.
He said the Cowboys wanted the building to be thought of as “futuristic” with an emphasis on technology, and that the building by itself said “Cowboys.”
“We got as credible and as legendary a brand that you can have in this country, and it’s synonymous with that,” Jones said. “The combination of the two … .we felt very strongly that Cowboys are a part of it. Not in the actual name, but the Cowboys recognized as part of that stadium. And so it was more incumbent to the point to call it AT&T Stadium.”
Jones said it was in the best interest of the franchise to go with “AT&T Stadium.”
“We have other events there that obviously will compliment what we've done with AT&T,” he said. “In all, from a stadium perspective and overall franchise look, it was in the best interest of how we're perceived and how we look to the future with the name being AT&T.”
