Cowboys owner Jerry Jones echoed coach Jason Garrett in refusing to rule injured quarterback Tony Romo out of Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
According to a source, Romo has a herniated disc in his back and will possible need surgery, making him unlikely to play against the Eagles and putting backup Kyle Orton into the lineup.
The Cowboys, however, are refusing to give up hope. Romo has already begun a series of treatments in an effort to be cleared to play against the Eagles, Jones said.
“He is going through treatment,” Jones said on his radio show Tuesday on KRLD-FM. “If it has positive implications then he should not be ruled out any way for this game. I won’t get into the details of the injury. But structurally if his doctor clears him and he can and its possible. If he is cleared to play he can very well play.”
Jones said Romo called him Monday morning to share the disappointing prognosis from the doctor and was very disappointed, even apologetic but determined to play against the Eagles.
“He was disappointed,” Jones said. “If you know Tony you can imagine what a competitor he is. He doesn’t want to miss a snap or a play. He was very disappointed for his team. He said over and over again how bad ‘I feel for you and my teammates’. He said ‘I’m going to do everything I can to get on the field. We need to beat Philadelphia’. Pain is not a deterrent to Romo. That is proven. We have seen him do it. We have seen him win big. Tony will play with the pain. His doctor has to clear him.”
Jones made it clear that the injury occurred during Sunday’s game against the Commanders and wasn’t something he was dealing with before the game. He said it happened right at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
