Rookie running back Joseph Randle has got to be feeling better about himself. He sounds like it, anyway.
He smiled when he talked about playing in the preseason opener in Canton, Ohio.
“It’s going to be a big deal for me,” he said. “First NFL game. And getting to do it in front of the Hall of Famers? I mean, how much better does it get?”
For Randle, at least, it could get much better if he is healthy and performs the way the Cowboys hoped when they drafted him in the fifth round in April. A thumb injury on his right hand kept him from practicing in the spring, so he knew he was not up to speed when training camp started.
“That was my first time being back on the football field in a long time,” he said. “Half a year. Longer than that. Normally, you get more preparation during the offseason. So you’re crisper. I had to work to get to that stage, and in front of everybody. But I’m back where I need to be.”
Randle scored two touchdowns in an 11-on-11 goal-line practice on Tuesday, gaining him some ground in a training camp competition with Phillip Tanner and Kendial Lawrence.
