Cowboys LT Tyron Smith vs. Giants DE Olivier Vernon: Cowboys’ left tackle Tyron Smith faces a stiff test this week against Giants pass rush specialist Olivier Vernon, who has seven sacks in the past five games. Vernon didn’t get home against Smith in the opener, but he has in the past. Vernon is the biggest threat to sack Dak Prescott, particularly with fellow end Jason Pierre-Paul sidelined. Smith, though, has played at an All-Pro level. He’s given up only one sack and has been flagged for five penalties (three holds, two false starts).

I have said it before that Vernon has been the only player that I have ever seen give Smith fits. Having said that I am not worried one bit. Run the ball at him.

He did for one game in MIA. But it's so hard to say what happened in that game though. Might have been bad footing on a rainy day, could have not felt well, etc.

For now, I chalk it up to an anomaly, because Tyron really didn't have any trouble with Vernon last time.(gave up a single pressure for the game, not sure if it was even Vernon).

Last game Vernon did his most of his damage on stunts against La'el, and couldn't be blocked by a TE.

Tyron seems to remember when a player embarrasses him.

Robert Quinn tossed him aside like a pre-schooler one pre season. He has since yet to record a sack on Smith. Even his breakout year in which Quinn had the most recorded pressures charted by PFF all time, he only got one hurry against Smith.

Same goes for Watt. Watt blew by him in what turned out to be a legendary Romo highlight. The next time Tyron lined up across from Watt was the probowl-- and it was clear he was taking it very seriously.

I think we'll see Tyron do some damage against Vernon. Not just this week, but for the rest of Vernon's days in the NFL.

Some players can just be difficult matchups for even the best.

There was a guy that played for the Saints that gave Larry Allen more problems than I ever saw from any defensive player. He was not really a big name player. I think his name was Joe Johnson and he was not even that big but he was able to get LA back on his heels multiple times. This was back when La'Roi Glover was with the Saints.

Vernon is a compact but not small player at 6-2, 275. He seems to be able to get under Tyron best than most DEs.

Listening to Xm today, they said that JPP gave Smith fits, true? I didn't think so. Free makes more sense.

Yes, but they will rush Vernon from that side on occasion.
:( Then have 2 TEs and the RB help him.

Actually, they have occasionally used 2 TEs to block the DE on Free's side and had Free double the DT with Martin. I've seen it more on run plays but it is a funny blocking scheme.

No they let Smith work alone....most of the time....and give Free some help when possible. And yes they run some 'Jumbo' schemes.

My point is that normally in Jumbo if both TEs are right, then one help blocks the OT and the other blocks a LB. Not even having the OT block the DE is what is interesting.

OV will most likely be on Free, unless Wynn or Okwara show they can handle Free by themselves.

I heard that too, but a lot of it was coming from a NYG beat writer who also casually flipped out the inevitability that "They'll beat the Eagles" as he was explaining how the Gnats are a done deal for the postseason. Bruce Murray asked him about concern in the NY locker room over the Dallas rookies, who are not the same players they were in their first NFL game. The guy said the Gnats aren't concerned, that there's a "quiet confidence" about the team. He said that there are more issues with JPP being out than just pass rush though. He said JPP had been a force setting the edge and playing the run game.

I'm thinking the guy must not be paying much attention though, because the Giants my be confident, but they aren't very quiet about it.

Exactly. Dallas needs to crush the Giants on Sunday, and really put their playoffs in doubt. I feel like if they lose, they are going to not recover.

There has been more chatter from the Giants as if they are trying to give themselves confidence. This is the organization that I despise the most right now. It's not the Eagles or Commanders, it's the Giants!
