The worst statistical season ever for the Cowboys defense did not discourage Monte Kiffin’s faith in his system.

He still believes in it, in part because he just saw it succeed in today’s NFL.

“I go back to the Seattle Seahawks with Pete Carroll,” Kiffin said. “The first year, they were 27th in the league. Then they got to ninth, and then they were No. 1. It just takes time.”

Kiffin, who lost his defensive coordinator position last year and was given the title of assistant head coach/defense, said the defense is built on speed and the ability to play fast. He said that will be an advantage for new coordinator Rod Marinelli.

“Rod talks about it all the time, we both do – we learned it at Green Bay – you cannot play fast if you don’t know what you’re doing. So our players have to get comfortable in the situation they’re in. The defense, with their concept of the defense and when you check this or check that, that’s where we’ll be better.”

Kiffin said the new players and some better depth will also help. He said it’s bound to, just like it did in Seattle.

“We’re a long ways to Seattle right now,” he said. “But that’s where we are. This is a very similar scheme. Seattle plays so fast. They were not fast like that in 2010, Pete Carroll’s first year. They did not play fast like that.”
