Safety Matt Johnson isn't worried about his future, because there is nothing he can do about it.
Johnson injured his foot during pregame warmups in the Hall of Fame Game. He played 19 plays on defense and five on special teams against the Dolphins despite the injury, but he hasn't been seen since and isn't close to returning. He said the injury "hasn't really been healing."
"I have no idea what’s going to happen," Johnson said of his future. "I couldn’t really control it. I couldn’t make myself better in their eyes or worse. I guess it was worse by not playing. That’s just kind of the frustrating part."
The Cowboys kept Johnson on the roster despite seeing little from him in the preseason last year because of a left hamstring injury. He then tweaked his right hamstring just before the season and hurt his back. He finally landed on injured reserve Nov. 17.
The Cowboys have a similar decision to make with him this year, having not seen him much since they made him a fourth-round pick. Their cuts are due by Saturday afternoon.
"Whatever happens," he said. "It kind of sucks that I couldn’t really control what’s going to happen by being hurt. I don’t know what’s going to happen. We’ll see."
Johnson said he doesn't know when he'll be ready to practice. That could get him a spot on injured reserve yet again. Or the Cowboys could cut their ties with him.
"Matt's deal is unfortunate," Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones said Tuesday. "Matt is not a guy who is wanting out. Unfortunately, he has had legitimate injuries that he didnt have in college. He had upper body injury [in college] that caused him to miss a little bit of time. But we did our research. He wasn't an injury guy. Everything he has had are real. Real hamstring defects, and now he has a foot injury that is real. But we haven't given up on him. We will continue to monitor his situation and go from there."
