Defensive tackle Henry Melton said he and the Cowboys talked even before he signed about holding him back during OTAs.

“We were going to keep it strictly headed towards training camp so I can really get as strong as possible,” he said.

Melton, recovering from an ACL injury, worked in individual drills on the first day of organized team activities at Valley Ranch on Tuesday. But he sat out the team practice. He said he expects to be 100 percent for training camp, which starts in eight weeks.

“That’s the plan. We still got plenty of time,” he said.

Melton watched the team drills and said the Cowboys have potential on the defensive line, which the Cowboys are trying to reshape after losing veterans DeMarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher in free agency.

“There’s a lot of athletic guys we got,” Melton said. “There aren’t a lot of big names on it, but it’s like I told them before, it’s about making a name for yourself. No one knew who I was when I first started, so it’s all about making a name for yourself. Looking around this room, there’s a lot of guys that are going to.

“I think we’ve got a lot of key components to really get it done.”
