Defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said Anthony Spencer’s return will help a lot as the Cowboys get ready for the season opener. But he is not sure how much Spencer will be available, if at all.
“Hopefully Spence will get back,” Kiffin said after Thursday night’s preseason finale. “That will help us for sure. But we have to have some young defensive linemen come through for us, no doubt about it. So it was important they played tonight.”
Asked about Nick Hayden’s value on the defensive line, Kiffin said, “He’s certainly going to be a big key because at our left end position, even if Anthony’s ready, I’m sure he’s not ready to play 60-something plays, that’s for darn sure. Just hope we get him back for some.”
Kiffin said the defense will also have to get past the loss of Jay Ratliff, who was placed on the PUP list this week and will miss the first six games of the season at a minimum.
“We just got to move on. That type of deal,” Kiffin said. “We didn’t know for sure if he would be ready or not, but we’ve got some guys in there that need to play and play more. We’ve got to hope some young guys come on quick, you know.”
Kiffin wasn’t happy with the run defense against the Texans but chalked it up to preseason.
“We had a lot of young players in there,” he said. “We didn’t really game plan it, and this and that. But we sure should have played better than that.”
