Cowboys cornerback Morris Claiborne didn't play Saturday, but he is closer to returning. Claiborne said he will begin running this week.
"I feel like I’m very close," Claiborne said after the Cowboys' 12-7 loss to the Cardinals. "I haven’t done any running since I [injured] it, so this week is going to be a big week for me, just getting out and running and seeing how I feel."
Claiborne sprained his left knee Aug. 6 and has missed all three preseason games. He vows to be back in time for the Sept. 8 opener against the Giants if not on the field before. The Cowboys play Cincinnati on Saturday on what usually is the final tune-up for the starters.
"I’m just going to play it by ear," Claiborne said of playing in the preseason. "I feel like I’ll be all right and be ready for the season. If God says the same, hopefully I’ll be out there next week."
Claiborne, a first-round pick in 2012, is frustrated. He wants to be back in his starting spot opposite Brandon Carr.
"It’s very tough, because anytime our guys are out there playing, I want to be out there playing with them, whether it’s practice or a preseason game," Claiborne said. "But at the end of the day, if I can’t do it, I just can’t. I’ve got to charge that to the game. Just try to get healthy, so that when it’s really live bullets I can be out there with those guys then."
Claiborne sprained the MCL in the same knee during last year's training camp and missed the team's first preseason game. He also injured the knee in the second quarter of the Baltimore game during the season but returned for the fourth quarter and finished the game.
