David Carter palyed 27 defensive snaps and five special teams plays against the Cowboys in the preseason. Though he had no stats, he must have done something right to impress the Cowboys that day.
Dallas worked out Carter, who was released by the Cardinals before the start of the season, on Tuesday and then signed him.
"I’m excited to be here," Carter said Wednesday. "I like the coaches. I like the players here. They’re real cool, real friendly. It’s a family environment, a brotherhood over here."
Carter, 6 foot 5, 300 pounds, has position flexibility. The Cowboys worked him inside at the nose and at the under tackle Wednesday, but he said he is fast enough also to play end.
"I had a little bit of success today, I feel, with my get off and my speed," Carter said. "It helps me out at those positions over here."
The Cowboys have been banged up in the defensive line. Jay Ratliff is out at least six weeks while rehabbing a groin injury. Anthony Spencer missed practice Wednesday with a knee injury that has limited him to 34 plays this season. DeMarcus Ware appeared on the injury report Wednesday, with a stinger in his shoulder that kept him limited in practice.
Carter replaces Landon Cohen on the roster.
"We just like him, and our [personnel staff] tracks a lot of players," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. "Guys on rosters, guys on practice squads and guys on the street. You're always trying to upgrade your football team. I think our guys do a really good job of that when there's an opportunity to upgrade or bring a guy in to see where he is. To see if he can possibly upgrade [your team] you want to take advantage of that."
Carter said he can be ready to play Sunday if he's needed.
"Oh, yeah, that’s my job," Carter said. "That’s what they’re paying me here for. That’s what I’ve got to do."
