Jeff Fisher, the co-chairman of the league's competition committee, expressed concerns about the Cowboys' HD board after his Titans' punter became the first to hit it in a 2009 preseason game. Fisher, now the Rams' coach, said he expected it to interfere with play more than it has, with Cowboys punter Chris Jones hitting the board this preseason.
The digitial board, which is 90 feet above the playing surface, has never been hit in a regular-season game.
"If it happens in the first game, you think it’s probably going to happen again," Fisher said. "So I guess I would probably say, ‘Yes, I probably am surprised.’ I think it’s good that it’s been both preseason games.”
Tennessee Titans punter A.J. Trapasso hit the Mitsubishi sign that formerly hung below the board in an exhibition game. It had not come into play again until Jones hit it during a game against the Bengals this preseason. Rules were put in place after Trapasso's punt hit the replay board.
By rule, the ball is dead once it hits the board, and the down is replayed. Replay can be used to verify that a punt hit the board.
"I don’t think it’s a big deal," Fisher said. "It’s only been twice and fortunately they’ve both been in preseason games. The officiating crews are prepared. They’re prepared every time they go in there to go ahead and enforce the play in the event it happens again."
