Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said the last drive of the game was “nut-cutting time,” and Tony Romo and the team came through.
“At the critical moments – we call that “nut-cutting time” – our quarterback stepped up and did a hell of a job, and I think the guys around him did a heck of a job,” Garrett said after the Cowboys’ 24-21 victory against the Giants. “We made the plays that we needed to make, when we needed to make them.”
The Cowboys have failed at “nut-cutting” time in other games.
Romo threw an interception in the last two minutes against Denver. Terrance Williams fumbled in the red zone at San Diego. The defense gave up a surprise sneak touchdown at Detroit. Last year, in Week 17, Romo was intercepted at Washington with a chance to drive for the division.
But Sunday night, for the second time in three games, Romo led a game-winning drive. And this time, in extreme conditions.
“First of all, I thought it was a great drive, and that’s really when you separate yourself as a quarterback, as an offensive football team, and as a team in general; when you go down and you’re able to make those drives in critical moments,” Garrett said. “You’re right. The conditions were not easy today, it was cold, and it was windy. People had a hard time holding the football; we had a number of those plays in the game that put us behind the chains.”
Garrett said the game reaffirmed that the Cowboys can come through in big moments.
“When you look at each other in those critical moments, and you make the stops, you make the plays, you convert when you need to, and you make that big kick at the end, it’s a good win for your team, particularly on the road in these kinds of conditions,” he said.
