Ryan says backup safety, others have impressed him

As a coach new to the Dallas Cowboys, defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is getting his first impressions of some of the players that the fans, media and coaches who have been here for years already have their own ideas about.

He’s already said cornerback Orlando Scandrick is “special.”

I'm looking forward to some Scandrick blitzes from the slot this season. How long has it been since we've had effective corner blitzes? Seems like a lifetime.

Did Ryan use air quotes when calling Scandrick special?

Well, it would be terrible if he said they sucked! :laugh2:

The thing about Ryan is he first and foremost motivated by his career climb. He wants to be a head coach next year. The most likely way to achieve that is by having the Dallas' Defense perform very well this year.

So, Ryan is extremely motivated not just from a competitive standpoint but also because of a career standpoint.

I think our defense will feel the flame of his wrath if they don't perform up to the expectations he is publicaly setting for them.

I think this demonstrates one of the strengths of Rob Ryan. The wisdom to know enough to encourage the guys that labor on the outside of the nucleus. It's no small wonder why players respond well to him. Giving them ample credit and causing them to feel good about themselves is a sure way to encourage their best efforts. I admire that quality in him.

This. :star:

I hope RR is right about scandrick. It would be a perfect scenario for Scandrick to win the starting CB role this year opposite of Jenkins and for Jenkins to play at his 2009 level. That way next year we would only need to replace our nickle corner either through drafting (preferrably) or FA acquisition.

Love it. Would absolutely love to see Scandrick and Church become starters and near star players after a good season under Ryan's tutelage.

exactly. finding a stud FS would be easier if the starting corners were sorted

This defense was horrible last year and it is returning 10 of 11 starters. Ryan probably used "air quotes" for the entire defense. They are certainly playing "special".

I don't think you should use last year as barometer to measure how good (or bad) the defensive personnel are. The defensive scheme was predictable and the players lost confidence early on. I am glad that we improved toward the end of the year so that was a good sign.

I also wouldn't use 2009 as a baseline either. I believe the team understimated the impact of letting the defensive QB Ken Hamlin go and we caught some lightening. I would venture to say that we are somewhere in between those two years (I would say we would rank between 10-14 in the league).

With that said, there are some variables that could swing our rankings one way or the other:

1 How quickly will it take the team to get RR's defensive down to the point they are reacting and not thinking
2 Will Spencer get back to his late 2009 form
3 can Tnew stay healthy/will he start to show his age
4 Can Lee Stay healthy and replace Brooking as the starter
5 In the event #3 is a negative answer, Is scandrick ready for the starting role and will Ball be sufficient as the nickle back/or will we bring in a vet CB

If the answers to most of these is yes I could see us moving into the top 10 defensively, otherwise, a ranking between 20-25 is not out of the question.

Really, but at this point, who's paying attention to another episode of the Keystone Cops?

Interesting comment by Ryan. He mentions that the secondary have a great teacher ... in Brett Maxie.
