Despite forcing New York into committing a whopping six turnovers in this past Sunday’s season-opener, Dallas Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick knows his team’s defense didn’t play a well-rounded game against the Giants.

New York quarterback Eli Manning completed 27-of-42 passes for 450 yards and four
touchdowns. That includes a 70-yard scoring strike to Victor Cruz and a 57-yard
completion to Hakeem Nicks as the Giants kept piling up big play after big play.

As the Cowboys prepare for Sunday’s game at Kansas City, Scandrick knows they can ill-afford to give up any big plays to the Chiefs and that they must keep their defensive breakdowns to a minimum.

“We’re lucky that those explosive plays didn’t come back to haunt us,’’ Scandrick said. “We need to go out and we can’t have any more busted coverages and no more explosive plays.’’

Asked what are his main concerns about the Chiefs’ offense, Scandrick didn’t hide his emotions.

“If you can’t be able to stop a team from getting explosive plays it doesn’t matter who you’re playing or who your opponent is,’’ he said. “It starts with us.

“Explosive plays are a blueprint of being a bad and losing team. Especially defensively.’’

The Cowboys’ six takeaways helped propel them to a 36-31 triumph over the Giants. But Scandrick knows realistically the Cowboys can’t expect to collect another six takeaways against the Chiefs or any other team this season.

But that won’t prevent them from trying.

“We’re going to keep going to the ball,’’ Scandrick said. “We need to play better, though.’’
