The Cowboys’ special teams have been disappointing, to say the least, in preseason. Dan Bailey has missed a kick, had one blocked, a punt has been returned for a touchdown, a kickoff for 51 yards, two punts have been fumbled, and twice, the Cowboys have been called for unnecessary roughness on a punt.
But better now than in the regular season, veteran special teams player Danny McCray said.
“We gave up some big plays, but you’ve got to remember that just like the offense and the defense, we are learning a new scheme, also,” he said. “We are playing things a little different. I think that’s what the preseason games are for, for us to figure those things out, and it’s good that those things happen in the preseason rather than Week 1.”
McCray said new special teams coach Rich Bisaccia is allowing the players to make mistakes so they can see them on film.
“He does a great job of installing his scheme, and he lets us mess it up out there on the field so we can get it coached in practice,” McCray said. “He doesn’t just keep stopping practice over and over again. He let us see the mistakes, get it on film and then comes in and fixes it on tape.”
But scheme or no scheme, tape or no tape, McCray said it comes down to the basics of special teams – blocking, tackling and effort.
“We’ve got to tackle. We’ve got to run. We’ve just got to get guys down,” McCray said. “We missed some tackles. We weren’t in our lanes on some of them. Those are things we can fix in practice. But the tackling, you’ve got to take pride in doing.”
